Philander works magic to defend 207

Asian teams' venue of doom plotted a defeat for India as South Africa won the 1st Test of the series by 72 runs. Among the 12 Tests that the sub-continental teams have played so far in Cape Town, 10 resulted in victories for the Proteas while 2 were drawn.

A total of 18 wickets fell down today as both sides posted 200 runs in aggregate. After a rain-marred day, South Africa continued today's game from their score of 65/2. They kept losing wicket in bunches and India followed the same process as they came to bat.

South Africa were all out on 130 runs and that set a target of 208 runs for the Men in Blue. Among the Indian bowlers both Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammad Shami picked up 3 wickets while Bhubaneswar Kumar and Hardik Pandya bagged 2 wickets each.

The wicket had nothing to offer to the spinners; as a result, Ravichandran Ashwin and then Keshav Maharaj remained wicketless.

Indian batsmen kept returning to the pavilion at regular intervals as none except for Kohli and Ashwin could go past 20 runs.

Virat Kohli, trying to salvage his team, made 28 runs before Vernon Philander trapped him lbw. Philander became South Africa's bowling ace in the absence of their pace spearhead Dale Steyn. Vernon took 6 wickets conceding 42 runs in the 2nd innings and was later awarded the Man of the Match.

Ashwin scored 37 runs and got dismissed by Kagiso Rabada. Hardik Pandya, who played a extraordinary knock of 93 runs in the 1st innings, managed to get only 1 run before Rabada scalped his wicket. Morne Morkel also got the wickets of Shikhar Dhawan and Cheteshwar Pujara that propelled his team to win the match in the end.

The target was not a big one considering the strong batting line-up India had. But the batsmen failed to string in partnerships which led to their inglorious defeat.

There is only one instance where the visiting team in South Africa went on to win a series despite being 1-0 down, and that dates back to 1923. India can still be hopeful of making something good out of this series if there batting performance amalgamate with the much-improved bowling attack they possess right now.
