Chairman of cricket operations committee of Bangladesh and former Bangladesh captain Akram Khan has opined that the younger stars of Bangladesh cricket need to be more consistent in their forays.

One of the most apparent problems for the Tigers is the lack of consistent involvement from youngsters like Sabbir Rahman, Soumya Sarkar and Anamul Haque Bijoy, with the seniors scoring most of the runs for the Tigers

Also, with the World Cup just under a year away, Bangladesh are yet to find a proper partner for opener Tamim Iqbal. Liton Das has been partnering the dashing left-hander in T20Is but Anamul Haque’s poor showing in the ODIs means that the spot is still up for grabs.

Meanwhile, according to Akram Khan, the quality of openers is more important than a cross-handed batting combination.

‘Quality is more important than left-hand-right-hand [opening] combination. If a left-handed opener deserves to be on the team, then there is no problem. [We will] have to see who is consistently working.’

He also talked about the underlying headache of Bangladesh cricket as he claimed that the side is heavily reliant on the seniors. As a result, he also called for the youngsters to pick up their game for the best of Bangladesh cricket.

‘As I have said earlier, our younger players are performing, but not consistently. If they can perform consistently, then the team will be stronger. The side is mostly dependent on the senior players.

‘Soumya [Sarkar] scored runs yesterday [for Bangladesh A against Ireland Wolves] after a long time. We have Soumya [Sarkar], Liton [Das], [Anamul Haque] Bijoy, Sabbir [Rahman]… if these players find form, then it will be the best for Bangladesh cricket.’
