Sri Lankan umpire Kumar Dharmasena has been given the opportunity to officiate the World Cup final even though he was heavily criticized for his controversial decision of giving England opener Jason Roy out incorrectly in the semifinal against Australia.

Roy batted superbly against Australia in the semifinal. He scored 85 runs. He was given caught behind in a bouncer from Pat Cummins. But in TV reply it was clearly seen that the ball totally missed the bat. But Dharmasena gave that out in contention of a strong appeal from the Aussies.
Roy didn’t have the luxury of using the review as his opening partner Jonny Bairstow wasted the review earlier. Roy was seen frustrated in this decision and he even used slangs while leaving the pitch. That was caught in the stump mic. Roy was fined 30 percent of match fee and given two demerit points. If he gets two more demerit points in the next years he can be banned for a Test or Two ODI’s.
But the controversy around Dharmasena isn’t new. He is heavily criticized for his decision back in 2016, in a Test match between England and Bangladesh. In that Test match, he gave eight wrong decisions. Among them, he gave English batsman Moin Ali out three times in six balls. Although, Dharmasena won the best umpire award from ICC in 2012 and 2018
