Leg-spin still an enigma to Bangladesh?

Facing leg-spinners have been a longstanding issue for the Bangladesh batsmen and might once again haunt them as they go into the Asia Cup in the UAE this month. Finding a solution to this problem remains tough due to the lack of leg-spinners even in the domestic circuit.

Mohammad Mithun, who has earned a spot in Bangladesh’s squad for Asia Cup, thinks it is unnecessary to pay too much attention to only a particular set of bowlers. According to him, one has to play against all kinds of bowlers in order to put up a good display with the bat.

“To play well, we have to handle all the bowlers, along with wrist spinners, well. One ball is enough for a batsman to get out. If I want to play a good innings, then I have to face every bowler well. And if I only target the wrist-spinners, then it will have a negative impact. The way I respond to different bowlers is what matters,” said Mithun.

In the group stage of the continental showpiece event, Bangladesh will be facing Afghanistan, the same team that completed over the Tigers in a T20I series in June this year. Afghanistan leg-spinner Rashid Khan accounted for eight of the 24 wickets that Bangladesh had lost in that series and that blatantly exposes the Tigers’ weak link in the game.

Another prominent leg-spinner that Bangladesh might have to face, depending on the group results, is India bowler Yuzvendra Chahal. He might have taken three wickets lesser than Rashid in as many games against Bangladesh in the Nidahas Trophy earlier this year, he maintained an economy rate below five in the T20I tournament, proving the Bangladesh batsmen’s inability to handle wrist spinners.

Mithun, too, admitted the insufficiency of leg-spinners in the country and confirmed that the team will stick to certain plans while facing leggies.

“We don’t have the option to prepare well against leg-spin. Because there aren’t enough leg-spinners in Bangladesh. We can’t even find leg-spinners [for practice]. We’ll still try to do the best and play according to the plans,” said MIthun.
