Bangladesh women's captain Nigar Sultana has set an ambitious target of winning at least three matches at the upcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in England as the team aims to improve on disappointing campaigns in recent editions.

Bangladesh struggled in the previous two tournaments, managing only one victory in eight matches.

In the 2022 edition, the team returned without a win after losing to Sri Lanka, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. In the most recent World Cup, Bangladesh defeated Scotland but suffered defeats against England, West Indies and South Africa.

“We have experience of beating India and South Africa before. I think that in the group we are in, we have the best possible opportunity to win at least three matches. We will have very good chances in two matches in particular, against the Netherlands and Pakistan.”

Nigar also emphasized that the team plans to approach the tournament one game at a time, with a strong start being a key factor.

“We plan to move forward match by match. But one thing I would especially say is that if we can get off to a very good start and create momentum, that will definitely help us a lot throughout the competition,” she said.

The Bangladesh captain also highlighted the importance of the World Cup as a platform for the team and individual players to gain greater recognition.

“First of all, I would say this is one of the biggest opportunities for our team. When we go to a World Cup, teams like ours generally get fewer opportunities and less exposure. That is why we always want to perform on a stage like the World Cup because it is one of the biggest centres of attention.”

“The eyes of the cricket world remain on the World Cup. When we perform well there, there is more discussion about the team and, particularly, when players perform individually, it creates different opportunities for them as well,” she added.

Bangladesh will begin their campaign against the Netherlands on June 14 before taking on Australia, Pakistan, India and South Africa in the group stage.

The team will also reach a milestone when they face South Africa at Lord's Cricket Ground on June 28, marking Bangladesh Women’s first-ever match at the iconic venue.

Speaking about the opportunity to play at Lord’s, Nigar said: “The team is excited to get the chance to play at Lord’s. Since childhood, when we started playing or watching cricket, there were certain famous and historic grounds where players always dreamed of playing. We have the same feeling and we are very happy to get an opportunity to play there.”
