Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Tamim Iqbal has indicated that the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) is unlikely to be held this year, saying the board does not want to stage the tournament without proper planning and management.

Tamim said the BCB is currently losing money from the tournament, while several franchises have repeatedly faced rule violations and payment-related controversies. He believes there is little reason to rush into another edition under the current circumstances.

“I don’t think the BPL will happen this year,” Tamim said in the press conference.

“For me, the biggest question is whether this tournament is generating money for the BCB. No. Are we making losses? Yes. Is the tournament running properly? No. Among the six franchises, three or four have issues with rule violations. When so many things are not working, I don’t see any reason why I should rush into it or make it a priority.”

He stressed that the BPL remains a valuable product with strong public interest, but the board is willing to take 12, 18 or even 24 months to rebuild the tournament properly rather than continue with a flawed system.

“I still believe the BPL is a very good product. There is a lot of interest in the BPL, and people come to watch the matches. If we can organise it properly, I believe that interest can grow even further.”

“But if I need to take 12, 18 or 24 months, however long it takes to get it right, I will take that time. If I do it, I will do it properly. Otherwise, I will not do it” he added.

Tamim also said the BCB would explore the possibility of bringing in foreign franchises, which he believes could significantly improve the league’s credibility, provided Bangladesh’s policies and regulations allow such involvement.

“We need to sit down and get a clear understanding of whether our country’s rules and policies are favourable to foreign franchises. We can approach them, but if it is not possible because of any policy, then it won’t happen.”

“I believe that if foreign franchises come into the BPL, the credibility of the tournament will increase significantly.”
