Taijul Islam became only the second Bangladeshi cricketer to take 200 Test wickets during the final session of the ongoing first Test against South Africa at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.
Having dismissed Tristan Stubbs before Tea, Taijul struck three more times after the break to achieve the milestone. He now joins Shakib Al Hasan, who has 246 wickets from 71 Tests, in this exclusive club.
Taijul reached the 200-wicket mark in just 48 Tests, surpassing Shakib, who needed 54 matches to reach the same feat, making Taijul the fastest Bangladeshi to achieve this landmark.
On Monday, Taijul dismissed David Beddingham immediately in the third session, followed by Tony de Zorzi, caught at short leg, taking his tally to 199 wickets. Just three deliveries later, he bowled debutant Matthew Breetzke with a straight delivery to secure his 200th wicket.
Taijul continued his dominant spell, completing his 13th five-wicket haul by having Ryan Rickelton caught behind for 27.
Earlier in the day, South African pacer Kagiso Rabada also reached a personal milestone, taking his 300th Test wicket.
