Nazmul Hassan Papon, the president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), could resign from his position at any time and following his potential departure, former national team captain and ex-chief selector Faruk Ahmed is emerging as a leading candidate for the board’s presidency.
Faruk confirmed to Cricfrenzy that the adviser’s office has approached him and has responded positively to their proposal.
“I have had discussions, but not about a specific position. I am interested in working with the BCB. There hasn't been any specific conversation about the position of the board president; it could be any role. I have shown my interest and wish to work towards the development of the country's cricket. I am eager to work in any policy-making position." Faruk told Cricfrenzy on Sunday.
Besides Faruk Ahmed, the list of potential candidates includes former national captains Aminul Islam and Khaled Masud, as well as cricket coach and analyst Nazmul Abedin Fahim. The name of Syed Ashraful Haque, former BCB general secretary and ex-ACC CEO, is also under consideration.
Regardless of who becomes the new president, the restructured committee will need to oversee cricket operations and the process of conducting new elections for the BCB.
According to ICC regulations, direct government intervention in restructuring the board is prohibited. Any violation of the constitution or ICC rules could result in a ban on Bangladeshi cricket.
Sports adviser Asif Mahmud had previously stated that the restructuring will adhere to ICC regulations.
