The ICC is mulling over shifting the forthcoming Women's T20 World Cup from Bangladesh to neighbouring countries like Sri Lanka, UAE and India due to the ongoing political unrest within the country.
According to Cricinfo, the apex body of cricket has begun looking out for the alternative venue options. While India and Sri Lanka are the potential substitutes to organize a multi-team tournament.
However, there are potential challenges as Sri Lanka faces the risk of rain in October, while India may encounter difficulties in securing visas for the Pakistan team.
“The ICC is closely monitoring developments in coordination with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), their security agencies and our own independent security consultants. Our priority is the safety and well-being of all participants,” a spokesperson for ICC was quoted.
On Monday (August 5), Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and departed the country after fresh violence among the protesters.
In the aftermath, Bangladesh’s army chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman said in a national address that an interim government would run the country and appealed for calm.
He added that there would be discussions with the president to form the interim government.
