Bangladesh ace-allrounder Shakib al Hasan opined that the side can elevate their performance against Sri Lanka and win Test matches.
Following Bangladesh's crushing defeat of 328 runs against Sri Lanka in the first Test, the Bangladesh team management has decided to include Shakib in the upcoming Test. The allrounder was sidelined in the white-ball format due to workload management and eye problems.
“We always hope to win. We always struggle in test cricket. It's tough for us. But I believe we should play better against Sri Lanka and win test matches,” said Shakib on Thursday.
Shakib was elated to be back in the red-ball format who last featured in a Test match in April 2023 when Bangladesh met Ireland in Mirpur.
“I don't have any personal goals. I don't think I ever had my eyes on any personal goals or achievements. I've always tried to figure out how to contribute to the team, perform for the country, and represent the country. It's always a matter of pride to represent the country. Naturally, I am happy and proud to return to the Test team,” he said.
Shakib was confident about his successor Najmul Hossain Shanto’s captaincy and stated it is early to pass a judgement about his role.
“It's a very early stage (commenting on Shanto’s captaincy). I am sure the BCB has thought about him for a long time. His start has been very good. Some results have come in his favour that will help him move forward. If everyone supports, he will be an extraordinary captain,” he added.
