All-format captain Najmul Hossain Shanto aims to lead Bangladesh to victory in a major tournament and wants to kickstart the planning process for the T20 World Cup 2024 with the upcoming series against Sri Lanka.
With the T20 World Cup scheduled to commence in June, Shanto is determined to begin the preparation for the tournament with this series. Given the limited number of matches available before the main event, they will have only 8-10 matches to fine-tune their strategies and team composition.
“We are doing well in ODIs. As a team, we have not won any major tournaments (like the World Cup). To move forward with that plan, we need to figure out how we can play good cricket in a major tournament or bring a trophy home for the country,” said Shanto in the press conference.
“The T20 tournament went well last year. I feel like there has been a lot of improvement in T20 compared to before. If we continue to improve in other areas, we can play well against any team in any condition. Our plan will become clearer. Every player’s responsibility should be to improve the team’s performance from their respective positions,” he said.
The 25-year-old also said he wants to capitalize on home advantage to win all the home series starting with Sri Lanka.
“I don't feel like we have made much progress in Test cricket. We have started playing better than before. However, I believe when we have matches at home, we should win most of those matches. Everyone should prioritise Test cricket. When we go abroad, we should be able to compete with the foreign teams,” he added.
Shanto was hopeful for every player to perform especially for the bowlers as he believes they will have significant impact in the matches.
"Everyone is in a good position in the team, I hope everyone will do their best in this series. The 5-6 bowlers in our team are all experienced and skilled. I think they can help us win the match alone,” he added.
