Bangladesh maintained their dominant form in Sylhet after winning the Mirpur Test, defeating Pakistan by 78 runs in the second and final Test of the two-match series to complete a historic whitewash.

It marked the first time the Tigers had whitewashed Pakistan in a Test series on home soil and also the second consecutive occasion they achieved a clean sweep against the visitors.

Najmul Hossain Shanto’s side had earlier stunned Pakistan 2-0 in Rawalpindi in 2024, making Bangladesh only the second Test nation after Australia to whitewash Pakistan in back-to-back Test series.

The victory also brought another milestone for Bangladesh, who registered four consecutive Test wins against the same opponent for the first time in their history.

Their previous best was three straight victories against Zimbabwe. The result lifted Bangladesh to fifth place in the World Test Championship standings, putting them temporarily ahead of teams like England and India.

Pakistan resumed the final day on 317 for 7 while chasing a daunting target of 437. Mohammad Rizwan and Sajid Khan initially frustrated the hosts and added valuable runs to keep Pakistan’s hopes alive.

Bangladesh even missed an early opportunity when Mehidy Hasan Miraz dropped Rizwan off Nahid Rana’s bowling.

The Rizwan-Sajid partnership added another 42 runs and began raising concerns for the home side. However, momentum shifted after the drinks break as Bangladesh returned with renewed intensity.

Taijul Islam provided the breakthrough by dismissing Sajid after the pair had put together a crucial 54-run stand for the eighth wicket. Sajid made a fighting 28 off 36 balls before departing.

Bangladesh struck again in the following over when Shoriful Islam removed Rizwan, who had looked set for a century.

Miraz completed the catch at gully as celebrations erupted among the home players.

From there, it became only a matter of time. Taijul wrapped up Pakistan’s innings with a six-wicket haul as the visitors were bowled out for 358, handing Bangladesh another famous Test victory.
