As the opening Ashes Test in Perth begins tomorrow, Bangladesh will already have a proud presence in the iconic series through elite panel umpire Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid Saikat.

The Bangladeshi official has been appointed as the TV umpire for the first Test and will step into an even bigger role in the next match as an on-field umpire.

The first Test will see Saikat working alongside on-field umpires Nitin Menon and Adrian Holdstock, with Australia’s Shon Craig serving as the fourth umpire. Sri Lanka’s Ranjan Madugalle will act as the match referee.

Saikat’s responsibilities increase further in the second Test of the series, starting 4 December in Brisbane, where he will stand as one of the two on-field umpires. South Africa’s Adrian Holdstock will join him in the middle, while India’s Nitin Menon takes over as the TV umpire.

Saikat’s assignments in the first two Tests once again underline Bangladesh’s growing reputation in the world of cricket officiating.

Saikat will not officiate in the remaining matches of the series. The third Test begins on 17 December, the fourth on 26 December, and the fifth on 4 January, with Jeff Crowe serving as match referee for those games.
