Mushfiqur Rahim stood just one run away from a fairytale hundred in his 100th Test as Bangladesh ended Day 1 of the second Test against Ireland strongly placed at 292/4 in Mirpur.

It was a day where the veteran wicketkeeper-batter showcased all his experience, guiding the innings with a calm, assured presence that held the lineup together after early hiccups.

Coming in at 95/3 following Andy McBrine’s triple-strike, Mushfiqur absorbed the pressure with patience and discipline.

His unbeaten 99 off 187 deliveries was a masterclass in Test match batting; soft hands, crisp singles, and the trademark resilience that has defined his long career.

His composure ensured Bangladesh never lost control despite Ireland’s occasional breakthroughs.

He first added 107 with Mominul Haque, who made a well-crafted 63, before stitching an unbroken 90-run partnership with Litton Das (47*), who ended the day looking fluent and assured.

Their stand ensured Bangladesh finished in a commanding position and set up the platform for a big first-innings total.

Ireland’s standout performer was Andy McBrine, who bowled tirelessly for figures of 4/82 from 26 overs, accounting for all four wickets to fall.

Bangladesh will resume tomorrow with Mushfiqur one run shy of a landmark that would perfectly cap his 100th Test.
