Reflecting on his time coaching Mushfiqur, Hathurusingha said, “The way he prepares, so extensively, I haven’t seen anyone do it like him. Perhaps only Sachin Tendulkar was similar or close.” The Sri Lankan coach had made similar remarks in September 2024 before Bangladesh’s Test against India in Chennai.
Mushfiqur’s dedication, discipline, long training hours, and relentless work ethic have long set him apart in Bangladesh cricket. Having coached Bangladesh in two separate stints (2014–17 and 2023–24), Hathurusingha saw Mushfiqur’s evolution up close.
Under him, Mushfiqur scored five of his 12 career Test centuries. Across 99 Tests, Mushfiqur has amassed 6,351 runs with 12 centuries and 27 fifties.
Speaking to Cricfrenzy ahead of the milestone Test against Ireland in Mirpur, Hathurusingha noted how much easier Mushfiqur made his job.
“During both my tenures, a big part of our success was influenced by Mushfiq. His work ethic, ability to take responsibility in tough moments, and quiet guidance to youngsters made my role much easier.”
Mushfiq now stands on the cusp of history, set to become the first Bangladeshi cricketer to reach the iconic 100-Test landmark.
