West Indies put up a solid total of 165 for 3 in their allotted 20 overs after being asked to bat first in the opening T20I against Bangladesh in Chattogram.

After a steady start from openers Alick Athanaze (34 off 27) and Brandon King (33 off 36), the visitors accelerated in the latter half of the innings, thanks to captain Shai Hope’s unbeaten 46 off 28 balls and Rovman Powell’s 44 not out from 28 deliveries.

Athanaze played fluently in the powerplay before falling to Rishad Hossain in the eighth over, while King’s innings ended soon after as Taskin Ahmed struck twice in quick succession, removing both King and Sherfane Rutherford in consecutive deliveries.

From 82 for 3, Hope and Powell rebuilt with a commanding unbroken 83-run stand off just 47 balls, lifting West Indies to a competitive total.

For Bangladesh, Taskin Ahmed was the most successful bowler, finishing with 2 for 36, while Rishad Hossain took 1 for 40.

Mustafizur Rahman was economical with figures of 0 for 24 from his four overs, but Tanzim Hasan Sakib proved expensive, conceding 47 runs.

The surface in Chattogram appeared true for batting, with the West Indies middle order capitalizing in the final overs, scoring 64 runs in the last five overs at a rate of 12.8 per over.
