Speaking ahead of the series opener in Colombo, Sri Lanka captain Asalanka acknowledged Bangladesh's current form and competitiveness.
“Every team is a challenge for us, and Bangladesh is a tough one because they have been playing really good cricket recently, even in the last series we played. Bangladesh won that series, and this one at home will be a big challenge,” said Asalanka at the pre-match press conference.
Bangladesh will field a full-strength squad for the series, with pacer Taskin Ahmed making his return from injury. However, Sri Lanka has their sights set firmly on star bowler Mustafizur Rahman.
“Mustafizur is a fantastic bowler. He has proved that in the past with great performances for Bangladesh. We have a clear plan against him because we know how dangerous he can be,” added Asalanka.
The ODI series will begin with two matches in Colombo, followed by the third and final game in Pallekele. On the nature of the Premadasa pitch, traditionally known to assist spinners, Asalanka shared some cautious optimism.
“Generally, Premadasa supports spin. But I think this pitch might be different and could help the batters. I’m not sure though; we’ll see tomorrow,” he said.
The match will also mark the ODI captaincy debut for Mehidy Hasan Miraz. While Asalanka admitted he didn’t know much about Miraz as a captain, he was full of praise for him as a cricketer.
“As a player, Mehidy Hasan is excellent. He’s a good bowler and a good batter. But I don’t know anything about his captaincy,” Asalanka concluded.
