Bangladesh suffered a dramatic late-day collapse on Day 2 of the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle, losing five wickets for just 26 runs and ending the day at 484 for 9.

After a brilliant 264-run partnership with captain Najmul Hossain Shanto earlier in the day, Mushfiqur Rahim’s marathon innings finally ended on 163 when he was trapped lbw by Asitha Fernando.

In the very next over, Litton Das, who looked well on course for a century, fell for 90 while attempting a reverse sweep against Tharindu Rathnayake.

The dismissals triggered a sharp decline in Bangladesh’s innings. Jaker Ali managed only 8 runs before falling cheaply, and the lower order couldn’t hold on for long. Taijul Islam (6) and Nayeem Hasan (11) were both dismissed in quick succession, leaving Hasan Mahmud and Nahid Rana to survive the final moments of the day.

Sri Lanka’s bowling was led by Tharindu Rathnayake, Asitha Fernando, and Milan Rathnayake, all of whom took three wickets each.
Earlier in the day, Shanto’s lbw dismissal for 148 to Fernando ended a record stand, followed by a rain delay of around two and a half hours, which disrupted Bangladesh’s momentum and eventually contributed to their late stumble.
