The upcoming edition of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) is set to take place between December and January.

Ahead of the tournament, the franchise selection process is currently underway, with 11 organizations expressing interest in owning teams.

To ensure a smooth and professional event, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has entrusted event management company IMG with full responsibility for organizing the tournament.

The BPL Governing Council held discussions with the potential franchise owners on Thursday, where several of them demanded the return of the players’ auction system instead of the existing draft format. The matter was confirmed by BPL Governing Council Member Secretary Iftekhar Rahman Mithu.

Speaking to the media, Mithu said, “The issue of bringing back the auction system was discussed today. We’ll talk about it further in our next meeting. We still have time, as the players’ draft is scheduled after November 15. We’ve taken note of the proposal, and we’ll decide based on what’s best for the league.”

In the first two editions of the BPL (2012 and 2013), players were recruited through an auction system.

However, since 2015, the league has adopted the draft system, which has continued to date. The franchises now argue that reinstating the auction format would not only increase competition for marquee players but also make the tournament more exciting.

The players’ draft for the next BPL season is expected to be held after November 15, but before that, the Governing Council may hold another meeting to decide whether the auction system will be reinstated.

The final list of participating teams and their respective franchise owners is also expected to be confirmed ahead of the draft.
