The Indian Premier League (IPL) auction for the 2026 season is likely to take place between December 13 and 15, with December 15 emerging as the most probable date. While the previous two auctions were held abroad in Dubai (2023) and Jeddah (2024), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) might bring the event back to India this time, according to Cricbuzz reports.

Although the exact venue hasn’t been finalized, the BCCI is expected to make a decision soon. The previous mega auction took place on December 19, but this year’s edition could be brought forward by a few days. Before the auction, franchises will have the chance to retain players, with the deadline for submitting the retention and release list set for November 15.

Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman, who played for Delhi Capitals last season as a temporary replacement for Jake Fraser-McGurk, is unlikely to be retained by the franchise for the upcoming IPL 2026 mini auction. Reports suggest that Delhi won’t be able to hold on to Mustafiz even if they wanted to, as temporary replacements cannot be retained.

Players such as T Natarajan, Mitchell Starc, Akash Deep, Mayank Yadav and David Miller among others, may also have to look for new franchises.

Teams like Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals, who finished low on the points table, are expected to make major changes.

Chennai have already parted ways with veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, freeing up ₹9.75 crore in their purse. The franchise is also reportedly considering releasing Deepak Hooda, Vijay Shankar, Rahul Tripathi, Sam Curran, and Devon Conway.

Meanwhile, speculation continues over Sanju Samson’s future with Rajasthan Royals. Although rumors suggest the captain might leave, no official confirmation has been made. The team could also part ways with Sri Lankan spinners Maheesh Theekshana and Wanindu Hasaranga, unless new head coach Kumar Sangakkara decides to keep one of them.

Other players who may be on the move include T. Natarajan, Akash Deep, and Mayank Yadav, along with overseas stars Mitchell Starc and David Miller.

Kolkata Knight Riders, who bought Venkatesh Iyer for a whopping ₹23.75 crore last season, face a big decision on whether to retain him. If they do, it could limit their options in the auction for new signings. Meanwhile, all-rounder Cameron Green, who missed the last season due to injury, is expected to attract strong bids.
