BCB plans Home-Away format in future for BPL

BPL
The Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) has traditionally been held across three venues—Dhaka, Chattogram, and Sylhet—in recent seasons. However, in a bid to enhance the tournament’s popularity and cater to public demand, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is considering the addition of a new venue for the upcoming edition.

With an eye on the future, BCB envisions gradually transitioning BPL into a home-and-away format, adding one venue at a time. Nazmul Abedin Fahim shared this long-term vision.

Bangladesh’s lone franchise-based T20 tournament has regularly drawn criticism, with calls for modernization and reform. In response, BCB is once again pledging a renewed effort to revamp the BPL. Under the leadership of governing council member Mahbub Anam, the board is taking structured steps to elevate the BPL's global profile.
One major step involves spreading the tournament across more regions—something BCB sees as essential to nationwide engagement.
Previously, BCB had stated that organizing the tournament in a home-and-away model was not feasible at the moment. However, the current administration appears more open to exploring possibilities.

Responding to popular demand, they have announced plans to add one new venue in the next season. Barishal and Rajshahi stadiums are currently under consideration, while Bogura’s Shaheed Chandu Stadium seems unlikely due to logistical and infrastructural constraints—something Fahim himself acknowledged.

Speaking on the matter, Fahim said, “I don’t think BPL in Bogura or Rajshahi is feasible just yet. These venues need time to be made tournament-ready, and we’re not there yet. However, the idea of a home-and-away format is definitely in our long-term plans. For now, if we can manage one additional venue—bringing the total to four—that would be a big step forward. We’re hopeful it will happen.”
Looking further ahead, BCB aims to introduce one new venue each year, with the ultimate goal of each BPL team having its own home ground. Fahim added, “If we eventually reach a point where all six or seven teams have individual home venues, BPL will transform into a tournament of a different scale altogether.”
In a significant move, the BCB is also planning to hand over the event management of the BPL to an external company. On July 10, they invited expressions of interest from event management firms to organize the tournament. Five companies have responded—four of them international.
Among the interested parties, the most prominent is IMG, which managed the Indian Premier League (IPL) from its inception in 2008 until 2021. Also in the running is The IPG Group, known for organizing the Pakistan Super League (PSL).
The other three contenders are Apex Sports Consulting, Real Impact and Absolute Legends Sports, Mind Tree Limited, and Transport Group. BCB is expected to make a final decision on the event organizer in the coming days.
