Former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal has opted out of the upcoming Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) elections. Earlier this morning, at around 10:15 am, Tamim arrived at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur to formally withdraw his nomination paper.

The BCB election is scheduled for October 6, with today being the final deadline for candidates to withdraw their nominations.

On Tuesday, following a writ petition filed by former BCB president Faruque Ahmed, the High Court issued a stay order on the inclusion of 15 disputed clubs in the upcoming election. Most of the votes from these 15 clubs were expected to go in favor of Tamim’s panel.

With the courts closed for the Puja holidays, there is no opportunity for appeal before the election, leading many to view the timing of the writ petition with suspicion. Meanwhile, reports emerged last night that at least 10 to 12 clubs in Dhaka are preparing to boycott the polls.

From the outset, the BCB election has been marked by visible government interference. Disputes arose over the selection of councillors from district and divisional sports associations, and now intervention in Dhaka’s clubs has raised further concerns, with many predicting an easy path to victory for government-aligned candidates. Against this backdrop, Tamim has decided there is no reason to remain in the race.

Explaining their withdrawal, Israfil Khasru, councillor of Exum Cricketers and a member of Tamim’s panel, told the media: “There is blatant interference in the BCB election. There is no environment for a fair election here. It’s complete authoritarianism. In a new Bangladesh, we do not want this kind of election.”

“A certain group within the government is interfering here. That is all I can say for now. We will soon hold a press conference to explain in detail,” he added.

On Wednesday morning, Tamim was seen at the BCB headquarters to withdraw his nomination. Alongside him were Rafiqul Islam Babu, Masuduzzaman, Ibrahim Ahmed, Mir Helal, Syed Borhan Hossain Pappu, and Israfill Khasru, all entering the Returning Officer’s office to complete the process.

According to sources, Tamim’s panel held a meeting on Tuesday night, where they decided to boycott the election citing government interference and conspiracies.

The final list of candidates will be published today at 2:00 pm. Approved candidates had the window from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm this morning to withdraw their nominations.
