‘It would be unfair to lose the tournament’ - Karthik

The Nidahas Trophy has been one of a kind with a resurging Sri Lankan side, a young Indian squad, and a Bangladesh team eyeing a comeback. The thrill was there until the last minute and India became the champions of the tournament by defeating Bangladesh.

Things certainly did not go well for the hosts—Sri Lanka who organized this tournament to mark the 70th anniversary of the country’s independence. But they did enjoy a good start by defeating India in the first match.

India then turned around and went to win all the following matches including the final. Bangladesh also showed great character to mount a comeback and kept alive their hopes of winning the tournament until the very last moment. They also took a sweet revenge by winning both matches against Sri Lanka who whitewashed them in a two-T20I series in their own backyard last month.

Bangladesh lost the final game in a last-ball thriller. And it was during the post-match presentation when Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan was booed continuously by the Lankan fans as a sign of their disgust about what happened between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in the last match. However, the all-rounder seemed determined to learn from the mistakes and to look at the positives.

Shakib said, "It hurts but we can learn a lot from this too. All credit to DK [Dinesh Karthik]. We can take a lot of positives from this game and someday we can come out victorious."

“We wanted our best bowlers to bowl those two overs [talking about the 18th and 19th overs], even if Rubel would have gone for 15 runs, we would've had 20 to play with but that didn't happen. He didn't miss his length by much but credit to Dinesh Karthik, coming into the wicket and hitting the first ball for six is not an easy thing to do.

“We knew it would be tough to defend, in the dressing room we had a very good feeling. Everyone tried their best, I can't expect more than that. In the end, we are on the losing side, so it hurts but we can learn so much from this. It was pre-planned who we want to bowl. It is such a close game, you can say so many things. Hopefully, we can work out from here and someday we can be on the winning side," he added.

Dinesh Karthik really took the match away from the Tigers in the last two overs by clubbing 29 off just 8 deliveries. He took 22 runs from the 19th over bowled by Rubel Hossain who conceded just 13 runs in his previous 3 overs.

Karthik also went for six off the last ball when 5 runs were required. India skipper Rohit Sharma also gave them a good start by picking up a half-century and ticking the score to keep the pressure off the team when they were losing wickets.

"I want to thank the Sri Lankan crowd for coming out and supporting us. Great tournament for us. A young bunch of lads - a lot of learning, we always knew that they had talent; they will get confidence from this tournament.

“These games are high-pressure games and it isn't easy. Quite easy to lead them, played with most of them. Lots of strategizing and it was about executing them. Very happy for DK. I want one of the experienced campaigners to stay at the end - that's why I held DK back. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't," said Rohit.

Dinesh Karthik, the Man of the Match said that he had been practicing these shots. According to him, not winning this tournament for the young side would be unfair.

He said, "Really happy to come out of this tournament. Wouldn't have done justice to this tournament had we not won with the bunch of young guys in the team.

“I have been practicing these shots - having a strong base and then hitting from there. Happy to be where I'm and thanks to the support staff who have kept on supporting me for the last few months."

Washington Sundar played a pivotal role for India throughout the tournament. He has scalped 7 wickets from 4 matches. He allowed only 20 runs in 4 overs and bagged a wicket in the final as well.

Winning the Man of the Series award, he said, "Definitely it means a lot. Such a reward at such a young age means very much. I really need to thank my family for this. This goes for them. When you are playing for your country, you should be ready to face any challenges.

“I really enjoyed bowling over here, this ground has always been amazing to me. I have always wanted to read the batsmen's mind and that's what I have been trying to do in these five games, most of the balls I won - that's a good feeling.

“I wanted to be there when we win the game, Dinesh bhai played really well and it turned out to be a memorable tournament for me."
