Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) cricket operations committee chairman Jalal Yunus stated the new captain of the national cricket team will be announced after a discussion with the regular captain Shakib al Hasan.
Shakib who suffered a thumb injury during the World Cup had to miss the series’ both home and away series against New Zealand. In the absence of Shakib, Najmul Hossain Shanto was handed the responsibility of captaincy.
Many speculations were looming that after Shakib, the left-handed batter Shanto would lead the side. He was also able to prove his capabilities as he led the Tigers to their maiden win against the Kiwis in the ODI and T20I in the foreign soil.
“If Shakib wants to continue as a captain it completely depends on him as he was given the responsibility. Due to injury, he could not go to New Zealand. He intended to play the ODIs, but he could not play due to injury. That means he would have captained if he had played the series,” said Jalal.
Jalal also mentioned that the new captain will be decided by the cricket board after a discussion with Shakib who is currently busy running the election campaign.
“Since he could not go due to injury, Shanto was leading the team. We handed Shanto to play the role till the next series. Now whether Shakib will captain or not or whether we will appoint Shanto in the position will be discussed by the cricket board. Shakib is still our captain because Shakib was captaining,” he said.
“Of course, we will discuss it with him. After knowing that, we will understand who will be long-term captain,” he added.
