Former Bangladesh coach Chandika Hathurusingha has confidently declared that Bangladesh need a fortune to produce a superstar like premier all-rounder Shakib al Hasan in near future as he labeled Shakib as ‘Once in a generation player’.
During an exclusive interview with Cricfrenzy, the most successful coach of the red and green team claimed that Bangladesh could find star players but not in form of Bangladesh’s Test and T20 captain.
In May 2014, Hathurusingha was named as coach of the Bangladesh national side, replacing Shane Jurgensen.

In his early period with the Tigers he had some issues with Shakib as the southpaw was suspended by the Bangladesh Cricket Board from all cricket for six months because of his misbehaviour with Hathurusingha.

But there was another side of the coin, Shakib was also at top peak of his form under the former Sri Lankan player’s guidance as he became the number one all-round cricketer of the world in all three formats - ODI, T20 and Test.
“Shakib al Hasan is once in a generation player. You are not going to get another Shakib for a long time. In world cricket he is a number 1 all-rounder and been there for a long time, he is a superstar. If Bangladesh try to find another Shakib I don’t think it will be fair to anyone. They will find some different superstars,” said Hathurusingha, who is currently serving as Australia’s New South Wales National Academy coach.
“If you look at 2007, many players come through that time like Mushfiq [Mushfiqur Rahim], Tamim [Iqbal], Shakib, they all play together then it took about five-seven years for them to be establish in international cricket. And now you see Litton [Das], Mustafizur [Rahman], Taskin [Ahmed] coming into the international cricket and finding their feet and confidence about themselves so it takes time. Bangladesh will find superstars in future but not in the form of another Shakib al Hasan,” he added.
Moreover, Hathurusingha has not that much expectations form the current Bangladesh team in the ongoing T20 World Cup in Australia even under the leader like Shakib.
“The world cup is going to be a challenge for Bangladesh, the very fact is that they haven't been successful in T20 crickets. Here, the condition is going to be the challenge as well as the other teams are far ahead in terms of skills and speed of the game from Bangladesh,” he said.
