Bangladesh are looking for a consolation win against five-time World Champions Australia in their last game of the 2023 World Cup as Bangladesh selector Habibul Bashar hopes to fight against them at Pune sans captain Shakib Al Hasan, who is ruled out with a finger injury.

Bangladesh have already been out of the semifinal race after winning just two matches. But with ICC Champions Trophy at stake, the last match is crucial for them. Only the top eight will qualify for the 2025 tournament.

"I think we can challenge Australia if we play our best. Australia are in very good form. They have some game-changers. David Warner, Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh - all good players. But no team is unbeatable. Of course we will try to play our best.” Bashar said to the media in India.

Glenn Maxwell on Wednesday was the toast of the cricket world a day after his unbeaten 201 powered Australia into the World Cup semi-finals with a thrilling win over Afghanistan.

The swashbuckling batsman lifted his team from 91-7 in their chase of 292 in Mumbai to achieve victory with 19 balls to spare as he overcame cramps and back spasms in an epic knock which has been described as the greatest ODI innings of all time.

Australia only lost their opening two games, then bounced back and took victory in six straight games.

Bashar believes that there is no such weak opponent in the World stage. Especially in this year's World Cup, Afghanistan, Netherlands also won against big teams and yesterday Afghanistan could get a stunning win over the Aussies.

Bangladesh also lost against Netherlands. As a result, this former captain of Bangladesh is unwilling to accept Australia as unstoppable.

“In all the matches we played in the World Cup, the opponents were very strong. You come to the World Cup, there are no weak opponents. Not just Australia; all the teams we have played with have been strong. If you think like that, Australia should not lose any matches. Australia lost two matches in the beginning,” he added.
