Tamim steps down as ODI captain, opts out of Asia Cup

Tamim: You’ll still see me for a couple of years

Tamim Iqbal stepped down as ODI captain, Tamim confirmed the matter in a press conference on Monday after a meeting with Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) officials and president Nazmul Hassan Papon.
"We discussed a lot. About my problem, what was the problem, what will happen next, everything. I have decided on one thing, which I have told them, also given the reason... I am resigning from the captaincy of the Bangladesh ODI team from today." Tamim said in the residence of BCB boss.
The Southpaw reversed his decision to retire from international cricket a month ago after an intervention by Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
"We also spoke to the honorable Prime Minister today. I gave her my message. She understood and explained me very generously,” he added.
Earlier, Tamim returned to the country from the UK on Monday, having undergone treatment for his back pain.
Tamim's problem is in the lumbar region of the spine. In medical terms, the part is called L-four and L-five. He also has a disc problem in his spine.

"Injuries are an issue. I've had injections (from London). But injections are hit and miss. I think for the team... I've always said one thing, I've always thought about the team above everything else. I think, It would be best for me to step down for the sake of the team."
Tamim opted out of the upcoming Asia Cup too due to injury concerns but hope to return in the New Zealand series, starting September 21, before the World Cup, said Jalal Yunus, chairman of the cricket operations department of the BCB.

The BCB is yet to decide on who would lead the Tigers in the Asia Cup.
"We'll decide [on the new captain] after discussion with everyone. Now that he has stepped down, the situation is not that simple. The new captain has to lead not only in the Asia Cup but also in the World Cup" Papon said.
Bangladesh begin their Asia Cup campaign on August 31 when they will take on Sri Lanka and will face Afghanistan in their final group-stage fixture on September 3.
