Shakib Al Hasan opted out of the IPL 2023 as the all-rounder from Bangladesh has officially informed the Kolkata Knight Riders team of his season-long unavailability, according to Cricbuzz.
The 36-year-old southpaw was bought by KKR for his base price of Rs1.5 crore. Shakib called KKR management and asked to be ‘excused for the season, according to the report.
A player cannot be released during the season after being purchased at the auction; only after the season has ended.

Shakib and Litton were retained by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) for the Test match against Ireland rather than being given permission to compete in the IPL, and according to the report, KKR believed that both players could participate in the IPL from the start.

The BCCI's note to franchises regarding Bangladeshi players read as follows: ‘Limited Availability. Players selected for Ireland series will be available from 8 April to 1 May.’
Shakib would have had only 20 days available to play in the IPL this season because Bangladesh was scheduled to tour England for a series against Ireland, but he choose to travel to the United States instead because of family commitments.
However, Litton Das, the other Bangladeshi player in the team, is anticipated to join the group later this week.
