Mahendra Singh Dhoni on Saturday returned as captain of Chennai Super Kings after Ravindra Jadeja stepped down with the defending champions making a dismal start to the Indian Premier League season.
Former England captain Michael Vaughan said he was not surprised after the decision of Dhoni reclaiming captaincy from Jadeja, who was handed the big role of leading Chennai in this year’s IPL.
Dhoni, 40, had quit the job two days before the 15th edition of the Twenty20 tournament began on March 26, putting Jadeja, a left-handed all-rounder, in charge of the four-time champions.

But under the 33-year-old Jadeja, Chennai, lost their first four games and have won just two out of eight matches so far. They sit in the bottom two above only winless Mumbai Indians in the 10-team table.
“I wasn't surprised. I look at the decision that Chennai made to give Jadeja to captain this year with MS [Dhoni] still in the team, I think it's such a hard job to take on when you've had this legendary skipper wicketkeeper player that's been leading the Chennai side from day one, then all of a sudden you're leading the side with him still in it and you've never really done much captaincy,” Vaughan said during Cricbuzz Live show.
Vaughan has compared Dhoni with legendary English Premier League coach Sir Alex Ferguson, who was the manager of English football club Manchester United and has won 13 Premier League trophies.
“When Alex Ferguson left Manchester United, It's kind of similar [with Jadeja- Dhoni situation] as you'd go into manage United while Ferguson still in the dressing room watching you. He's still a part of the team, but you've got to now manage Alex Ferguson. That's pretty much what Jadeja has been having to try and do is manage the legendary Ms Dhoni, who's still in the dressing room, still playing. I thought it was always going to be very difficult for him” he added.
Under Dhoni, Chennai became one of the most successful IPL teams (4 titles) since the league began in 2008 and apart from title wins they also have five runners-up finishes.
Dhoni, who quit as all-format India captain in 2017, has remained Chennai's backbone as a leader and wicketkeeper-batsman, as well as a huge crowd-puller in the cash-rich league.
Dhoni led Chennai to 121 wins in 204 IPL matches and two Champions League T20 titles in 2010 and 2014, before the tournament was stopped.
