Sri Lanka reached where no Asian nations had gone yet before. The visitors became the first Asian nations to clinch a Test series in South Africa, beating the hosts by eight-wicket in the second Test in Port Elizabeth on Saturday.
The visitors whitewash the hosts in the two-match-Test series. They have now joined England and Australia in South Africa, who previously won the Test series in South Africa.
However, Sri Lanka resumed on day three at 60 for 2, with the need of 137 runs. Oshada Fernando and Kusal Mendis struck unbeaten 75 and 84 respectively for registering the victory on the morning session. The duo made an unbeaten partnership of 163 0ff 213 in the third-wicket-stand.
Earlier, the hosts made 222 and 128 respectively in their two innings and set a target of 196 for the visitors as Lankans scored 154 in first innings. Sri Lanka started their second innings just an hour before the stumps on Friday. They got the first blow for 32 when Lahiru Thirimanne (10) was removed by Kagiso Rabada. Then, after two runs, another opener Dimuth Karunaratne was dismissed by Duanne Olivier for 19. But, Oshada Fernando (17*) and Kusal Mendis (10*) took the charge and the visitors ended the day without any loss. However, the day ended with a total of eighteen wickets fell, the highest at this ground since 1914.
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka won the first Test in a thriller as they chased 304 for 9 and claimed a one-wicket-win in Durban held from February 13 to 17. Kusal Perera knocked an unbeaten 153 to guide the visitors to the victory. Sri Lanka have won two of their last six Test series, both against South Africa. On the other hand, South Africa had won their previous seven series at home and had won 16 out of 19 home Tests except for the last two games against Lankans.
