Skipper Mushfiqur Rahim led the side to go atop of the BPL point table as he smashed a splendid 46 ball-64 not out to help the side secure a facile six-wicket win over Rajshahi Kings on Wednesday at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.

Mushfiqur’s captain’s knock was complemented by Mosaddek Hossain Saikat’s unbeaten 43 off 26 and Chittagong overhauled Rajshahi’s 157 for five, making 159 for four in 19.4 overs.

Mushfiqur and Mosaddek combined for an 88-run partnership for the unbroken fifth wicket partnership to script the victory that helped them amass 12 points in seven BPL games. Dhaka Dynamites and Comilla Victorians have 10 points in eight matches but the former stays as second position by better run rate.

Chittagong had a disastrous start in pursuit of the target, being reduced to 30 for three as left-arm spinner Arafat Sunny and captain Mehidy Hasan Miraj wrecked havoc on their top order.

Mushfiqur resisted with the ably support from Nazibullah Zadran as the duo staved off Rajshahi’s march with a 41-run partnership for the fourth wicket.

Sunny returned to his second spell to break the increasingly dangerous partnership by dismissing Nazibullah Zadran and gave the side a glimmer of hope.

With the help of two fours and one six, Afghan recruit Zadran made 23 off 19.

Mushfiqur however got support in Mosaddek to dent Rajshahi’s hope and sailed the side home without any fuss.

In his match-defining knock, Mushfiqur smacked six fours and two sixes while Saikat smote four fours and two sixes in a knock of 43 unbeaten, which should give him confidence after a string of poor performances in the previous matches.

Arafat Sunny finished with three for 22 in four overs while skipper Mehidy Hasan Miraj took one wicket.

Fresh from his century in the previous match, Laurie Evans once again was the instrumental in Rajshahi’s total. Evans held together the innings amid a top order collapse that saw Rajshahi reeling to two for eight in fourth over.

Ryan Ten Doeschate came up with some support for Evans much like the previous match and they shared 54 runs for the third wicket to keep Rajshahi aloft. Abu Jayed Rahi broke through with the wicket of Doeschate who made 28 off 20. Sunzamul Islam then gave Rajshahi another setback by taking out Zakir Hossain cheaply.

At this phase, Chittagong bowlers were able to stem the run flow even though Evans found occasional boundaries. Pace bowler Khaled Ahmed took the prized scalp of Evans after he smashed 56 ball-74 with eight fours and two sixes.

Christian Zonker’s 36 not out of 20, laced with three fours and two sixes helped Rajshahi finally go past 150 which was by no means an easy target for Chittagong Vikings in slow wicket. Skipper Mehidy was unbeaten on 10.

Khaled Ahmed took two wickets for 30 runs for Chittagong while Sunzamul Islam, Robbi Frylinck and Abu Jayed picked up one wicket apiece.
