Bangladesh’s world cup selection going to be interesting: Warner

Before his BPL journey came to an abrupt end, David Warner showed his passion and panache for not only the cricket but also for his side Sylhet Sixers. In this short period, he gelled well with the team and guided the youngsters and at the same time observed the Bangladeshi cricketers intensely. In an interview with Cricfrenzy’s Z Ahmed , he talked about Bangladeshi fans, BPL and Bangladesh’s world cup ambition. Here are the excerpts of the interview.
Cricfrenzy (CF): You are the captain of Sylhet. And you are in Sylhet now, the most beautiful city of Bangladesh. So, how to do you feel playing in Sylhet? As you are playing in the team’s home and getting support from the audience, so how do you feel about all these?
David Warner (DW): Yes, it’s great. We are absolutely loving it. We are trying to make it as our fortress and so far we have won one from two. The crowd is being phenomenal and they are cheering for us. And we are really excited. Hopefully we can win the two games and team is looking forward to Dhaka and Chittagong.
CF: How do you feel about it being back in the track?
DW: I am feeling good. Obviously the wicket was much better in this game. We went out there and we had a different situation and we opened with Liton and Sabbir. There was a plan for us to go out there and play with some freedom. And for me and Pooran and the other guys to bat through the middle period and trying to post a good total. We got off to a great start and then our bowlers did a good job.
CF: We have seen you batting right-handed, what made you do that?
DW : What made me do that, The fact that I can’t bat right-handed and he was bowling to a length that I couldn’t get under made me changed it up and no one ever bowled me batting right-handed. Its gonna be a different change and I wanted him to put the ball into the wicket. The first ball he did that and he bowled full in the next two looking to my hand.
CF: Was it quite impressive?
DW: I play golf right handed and that’s natural swing, so no different to cricket. So, it comes very natural.
CF: It was standstill for a moment when you changed your stance and then the whole stadium went wild. Did you enjoy that?
DW: When you go out there and batting you hear the noise but you don’t really concentrating on any of that. For me it’s doing what I have to do score runs and finish off the innings well to get something out of it. For me at the back of the mind there were three dots and there was a risk and the risk was necessary. I wouldn’t have done that if I don’t feel like I can do it.
CF: You also danced rolling your hips. Can you tell us something about it?
DW: We have two West Indians in our team and they encourage us to do this little we do for celebration. You would probably see it more often.
CF: And playing those station games?
DW: We play FIFA all the times every time someone win or lose they shake in front of them.
CF: Is toss becoming vital in BPL considering there is dew?
DW: Technically it doesn’t but when you are bowling second it is always difficult to bowl on the dew. So it’s irrelevant it’s more a psychological thing when you bowl second but definitely its more dew later on in the night.
CF: What is the difference between local players and Australian player considering you have different body language?
DW: The difference is when we come into franchise cricket we do what we have to do to get ourselves right and then the other guys follow because at the end of the day you got to be fit to play this game. You got so much times between games you can go to the gym you can be active and do all those things. If they choose to do that than that will help them because it’s not goanna hurt you if you are doing extra stuff. I think that is something that is ingrained in us for long time. Fitness is a big part in what we do.
CF: Any local players attracted you in BPL..
DW: They all have. They all have been encouraging specific any one because every person this squad has been fantastic. They have listened to everything that Waqar bhai have said and listened to everything that I have asked them to do both on and off the field. I think we are gelling well together and I can’t ask for anymore from the guys.
CF: What is your overall assessment of Bangladesh Players?
DW: Its very good there are lot of talents. Its going to be interesting to see selection for the Bangladesh World Cup team because there is lot of talent there. Obviously playing in those English conditions, we have got some world class bowlers in our team. I have faced Taskin before I know exactly how he bowls and he is a very smart bowler. You got Al Amin and the young guy Rana (Mehedi Hasan) he is very good. These guys are playing well at the moment and frankly speaking they are listening to what I am saying and what Waqar saying. You got one of the best bowling coach in the world here with them learning facing some of the spinners who are very good and you have got lot of thinking to do because you have got lot of good players.
