Nearly a month into his new role as West Indies’ interim head coach and Nic Pothas has figured out the areas that the concerned authorities should focus on. According to him, competitive environment in the domestic circuit is the only thing that can serve the team’s purpose and bring better players into the setup.

He said: “There’s a lot of places that need to be covered. As a group, we’re probably a little bit behind. There’s no high-performance environment in the West Indies. I know they are working on that and understand the importance of a high-performance environment, as well as understand the importance of having a good competitive first-class competition.

“The higher the intensity of the games you’re playing back home, the more professional academy and high-performance you have – that’s going to provide players that are ready for international cricket.”

In the absence of some of their most important players who do not make regular international appearances, reshaping the supply chain for the team is indeed a viable option for the Caribbean side.

With many interested in becoming freelance T20 cricketers, the best West Indies can do is, keeping the replacements ready.
