Bangladesh Mominul Haque relishes the prospect of being tested as a top-order batsman in the ODI setup of the Tigers.

Mominul, the “backup man” of Bangladesh Asia Cup squad can become the main man if regular opener Tamim Iqbal's fitness concern stays the same. After being picked considering the injury situation of the Bangladesh batsmen, Mominul's chances of playing in the best eleven is very much slim.

But the 26-year-old is ready to bat anywhere if the team requires him to do so. Mominul, who played 29 Tests as a top-order batsman and used to play up the order in the domestic ODI competition, can open the innings if the situation demands.

The diminutive left-handed batsman is happy to open the innings, if that helps him to feature in an ODI after more than three years.

“I am ready to bat anywhere,” Mominul told Cricfrenzy, on Friday. “If I am required to open the innings to serve the purpose of the team, I will be happy to take the challenge. Being a top-order batsman I went on the wicket very early in the innings several times”'

Even if Mominul Haque has been taken as a backup player, Team management indicated that Mominul is very much in their plan because of an injury-struck squad. Both Tamim Iqbal and Nazmul Hasan Shanto picked niggles in the fielding session, which forced them to skip the remaining part of the practice camp.

Bangladesh will begin their begin Asia Cup campaign against Sri Lanka on September 15 and will fly out to the United Arab Emirates on September 9. Chief selector Minhajul Abedin said that although it is too early to suggest anything, they are not taking any chances as Tamim Iqbal's longstanding finger injury has resurfaced.

Abedin said, “Tamim Iqbal has an old injury on his finger. However, the physio’s report has indicated no serious issue. If we face any [injury] problem during or before the tournament then he [Mominul] can be a backup player.

“It’s not an injury as such. According to the physio, everything is okay. It’s just that we’ve taken a backup player. We’ve taken Mominul so that we have no problem even if Shanto’s pain increases after recovery.”
