Bangladesh complete emphatic turnaround

It took Bangladesh six long years before they could win another T20I series as Bangladesh beat West Indies on their own turf to win the T20I contest. For a team like Bangladesh, that just got thrashed by Afghanistan in their last three-match T20I series, winning a T20I series against the reigning champions of the format is a big achievement.

The only dent in this tour is how they fared up in the longest format of the game but all that has been slightly forgotten.

After winning the toss, Bangladesh opted to bat first as they had a plan in mind with Liton Das and Tamim Iqbal opening for the team. Both of them came out all guns blazing as Bangladesh raced to 50 in 3.4 overs – their fastest ever in T20Is.

Tamim Iqbal fell a little later for 21. Soumya Sarkar came in next and once again disappointed with the bat as he made five runs before Keemo Paul bagged him.

Meanwhile, Das continued his massacre as Mushfiqur Rahim also fell soon on the other end. Shortly after, Liton Das also fell after making an emphatic 61 from only 32 balls for the Tigers.

Mahmudullah Riyad, Shakib al Hasan and Ariful Haque batted sensibly to give Bangladesh a decent finish of 184 runs from 20 overs after the loss of five wickets. Though at one point, it seemed as though Bangladesh would easily cross the 200-run margin.

For the West Indian bowlers, Keemo Paul and Carlos Brathwaite ended with two wickets each while Kesrick Williams finished with one scalp to his name.

With the bat, the Windies kept losing wickets from an early stage and at regular intervals. By the time six overs were complete, West Indies found themselves lingering at 32 for 3.

By 11.3 overs, it became 77 for 4 as the series was beginning to slip out of their hands.

However, the wrath of Andre Russell still remained.

The dashing all-rounder smashed 47 runs 21 balls and made it look like West Indies have a real chance to win the game from jaws of defeat. However, Mustafizur Rahman – the bogeyman of Russell – picked his wicket, after which the rain deities had seen enough and cut short the match with their visit.

Rovman Powell and Denesh Ramdin made 23 and 21, respectively, but couldn’t lead their team to a victory.

For Bangladesh, Mustafizur Rahman was the best of the bowlers as he took three wickets from 3.1 overs and gave away 31 runs. Abu Hider Rony, Rubel Hossain, Soumya Sarkar and Shakib Al Hasan took a wicket each as Bangladesh won the match by 19 runs using D/L method.

What they said

Shakib Al Hasan, Man of the Series: "Unbelievable effort from the boys after losing the first game. Everyone had the belief that we can come back strongly. All the boys showed character and hopefully, we can continue this ahead. We don't have a great T20 record but this will give us lot of confidence. I was planning for myself to perform well. The guys put in their hard work and nothing more I could have asked from them. We have been doing very well in ODIs, since 2015. We know how to win tight matches. We need to work on our Test cricket, just that we need to do well overseas. The way the crowd supported us, so many Bangladeshis, we never felt away from home. They played like our 12th man."

Liton Das, Man of the Match: "Good win for us. They are a very good side and the World Champions. The pitch was ok, similar to our country and easy to plan on. Thankful to my god and very lucky to win this award."

Carlos Brathwaite: "It wasn't our smartest batting performance. At the back end, needing 30 or 40 we didn't keep enough wickets in hand. To pull them back in the final overs was a good job. At one point, they looked like scoring 200-220, but restricting them to 184 was one hell of a job. We could have done things differently but that's how cricket works. Sometimes you just got to give the credit to the opposition. Kudos to them for playing the way they did. The batting from Rovman has improved, not only in T20s but also in ODIs as well, and Nurse has been fantastic. It'll be important for us as we go to India and Bangladesh. Hope we get better there and execute our plans. Think we are getting closer and closer to finding the proper plans and executing them."
