Indian captain Virat Kohli’s valiant effort could not get India over the line, as England defeated the visitors by 31 runs. Though, the difference between the two teams seems slight, it was mainly Kohli’s brilliance that carried India throughout the course of the match.
However, Naseer Hussain had some insightful words to say after lauding the Indian captain for his efforts o 149 and 51 runs respectively in both the innings.
Speaking to official broadcasters Sky Sports, Hussain said, “Kohli was phenomenal in this game. He deserved to be on the winning side for the way he played with the tail. He single-handedly brought India back into the Test match. I do think he [Kohli] should take some of the responsibility for the loss, though.

“England were 87/7 with Curran and Adil Rashid at the crease and for some reason Ravichandran Ashwin went out of the game for an hour. India lost control then - he needs to look back on his captaincy and say 'when I've got a bloke who averages 19 against left-handers and a 20-year-old left-hander on strike, why did I take him off?” Hussain remarked.
It is a valid point though, as England managed to gain control despite having lost the core of their batting lineup.
The inability to dismiss opposition’s final few batsmen in overseas conditions has troubled the Indian team on numerous occasions in the past. The previous match at Edgbaston was a clear indication that the team and the captain need to rectify certain decisions.
Former Indian captain, Sourav Ganguly was critical of the constant shuffling in the playing order, as Cheteshwar Pujara wasn’t included in the playing XI at Edgbaston. Ganguly said, “One criticism for Virat Kohli is that he should give a consistent run to his batters & more time before dropping them. The failure against swing in English conditions can't be used as an excuse anymore as everyone knows that it's what you get when you come to England.”
The Indian team needs to be more clinical and incisive in their approach, if they were to bounce back in this Test series.
