X-factor Buttler: England's best chance to win the World Cup

Former England cricketer Michael Vaughan has picked Jos Buttler as the X-factor for what will be the team’s best chance to win the ICC World Cup.

“I look at the England side and Buttler is the one,” Vaughan said. “Teams that win trophies have X-factor cricketers. He's right up there.

“If he's fit next year, they've got the best chance they have ever had. I've got everything crossed that he doesn't pick up an injury.”

Buttler singlehandedly saved England from the verge of a defeat against Australia and helped the team secure a whitewash of the Kangaroos.

The same batting lineup that had registered 300+ runs in three consecutive matches, suffered a wobble to slip to 114 for 8. Buttler then prevented further wicket-loss and shared an 81-run stand with Adil Rashid, where the latter’s contribution was just 20 runs. He notched his sixth century after Rashid’s departure and helped his team cruise to a narrow one-wicket victory.

“What he provides to the team is that calmness,” said Vaughan. “Whenever he is out there in the middle, he reads the game better than most.  He knows and the team know that the opposition are scared of him more than most.”

According to Vaughan, England’s last win in the series is more important than their record-breaking total of 481 runs in the third game of the series. The way the team held their nerves despite getting so close to a defeat is what will help the team in the future.

“Forget the 481 at Trent Bridge and the other hammerings - this game is one England will take more from,” Vaughan opined.

On the other hand, the wicketkeeper-batsman has also been lauded by England assistant coach Paul Farbrace, who is in charge of the team for the next four T20Is. Farbrace has set Buttler for the opening slot ahead of the upcoming T20Is.

“You want to get your best strikers facing as many balls as possible. The form he's in, the way he's playing, it makes sense to get him at the top of the order,” said Farbrace.

Buttler’s highest T20I score (73*) also came the only time he had opened the innings for the England team. He was outstanding in the opening spot during the IPL this year, where he helped the team qualify for the playoffs by amassing 548 runs at an average of 54.80.
