Australia clinch record-breaking victory over the hosts

Australia’s first away match in the tri-nation series against New Zealand is undoubtedly the best one in the tournament until now and one of the most entertaining matches in the shortest format of international cricket.

Australia won the clash by registering the highest successful chase in the history of T20Is. The Kangaroos defeated New Zealand by 5 wickets to overcome the 2-year-old record of the highest successful chase of 236 runs by West Indies against South Africa.

Winning the toss, the Black Caps decided to bat first. A 132-run opening stand in 10.4 overs powered the Kiwis to pose a daunting total of 243 for 6 wickets in the 1st innings.

Opener Martin Guptill smashed a ton while his opening partner Colin Munro picked up a half-century as well. Both the openers were dismissed by Andrew Tye, who conceded the highest amount of runs (64) for the Aussie side after bowling for 4 overs. Later in the next innings, New Zealand fast-bowler Ben Wheeler allowed the same amount of runs, but in 3.1 overs.

Guptill made 105 off 53 and Munro took 76 runs facing 33 deliveries. The stage for a massive total was already set and the rest of the batsmen had to take as much runs as they could to carry on with the momentum.

No other big innings was posted but Ross Taylor’s cameo of 17 from 6 balls lifted the total past 240. Among the Australian bowlers, Kane Richardson scalped 2 wickets while Ashton Agar ad Billy Stanlake bagged one wicket apiece.

While chasing the mammoth total, Australia reached 245 runs with 7 balls remaining, thanks to two fifties from each of the openers – David Warner and D’Arcy Short. Warner was out bowled by Ish Sodhi on 59 off 24. Short made 76 off 44 before Trent Boult got his wicket.

Colin de Grandhomme sent Chris Lynn back to the hut by dismissing him on 18 runs. Glenn Maxwell amassed 31 runs from 14 balls and Aaron Finch remained unbeaten scoring 36 runs facing the same number of deliveries.

Maxwell got bowled out by Southee before Marcus Stoinis fell victim to a run out scoring 4 runs. A 121-run opening partnership between Warner and Short, alongside another 56-run stand between Maxwell and Short kept the score ticking and never let the visitors decrease the aggression that they were exhibiting in their batting from the very beginning.

The star batsman of the recently-concluded Big Bash League, D’Arcy Short, was awarded the Man of the Match for guiding his team to an ‘unimaginable’ victory.

The Kiwis will take on England in the last match of the group stage on February 18. This match will decide the finalist who will be facing Australia on February 21. A win or a defeat by narrow margin will be enough for the hosts while England are in a must-win stuation
