Hathurusingha startled by Bangladesh's performance

Sri Lanka head coach was surprised to see Bangladesh’s batting performance in the last Test at Mirpur. During Hathurusingha’s tenure, the Tigers defeated teams like England and Australia in Bangladesh and also won their 100th Test against Sri Lanka at their own backyard. However, their batting line-up stumbled against the same team but this time, on their own soil.

Chandika Hathurusingha was clearly disappointed as Bangladesh's performance could not even meet his expectations. Bangladesh batted poorly and could not go past 125 runs in both innings in the 2nd Test.

Hathurusingha reportedly said, “It's a tough wicket. They can’t blame them just because they couldn’t [do their jobs properly]. But the way they failed, I did not even expect it. Their batting could have been better. You can’t expect to score not 300 runs on this wicket but 240 is a good score for the first day. We made 220 [222], albeit a little less. But I did not expect them to get all-out at 110 in the first innings.”

After getting thrashed by India and losing the first two matches against Zimbabwe and Bangladesh in the tri-nation series, Sri Lanka bounced back brilliantly and went to win the tournament.

Regarding the change in performance, Chandika said, “You always have to be well-prepared. You have to understand the strength of the team. Planning and strategy should be done in accordance with your strength. If you are well prepared and have a good plan according to your strengths, you may not succeed everywhere but you can be a highly competitive team wherever you go.”

The former Bangladesh head coach said that a Test-wicket requires at least six months to be prepared. He also stated that it is difficult to make different wickets at a venue where games take place very frequently.

“Many games have taken place here in the last six months. It is difficult for a person to make different wickets at this time. If you see in the tri-series, a good number of wickets fell in almost every match. We started well [in the Test]. You have to give at least six months to make a wicket for Test,” said Hathurusingha.
