21 Dec 24BCB director Nazmul Abedin Fahim confirmed the decision, saying, “The board has been exploring ways to further develop women’s cricket. With that in mind, we discussed the possibility of organizing a Women’s BPL. Today, we have decided to make it happen.”
The Women’s BPL will feature three teams in its inaugural season, following a format similar to the Women’s CPL in the West Indies, which also started with three teams. Neighboring India, however, launched its Women’s Premier League with five franchises.
Nazmul Abedin added, “The first edition of the Women’s Bangladesh Premier League will be held with three teams. It is scheduled to take place right after the conclusion of the men’s BPL and will run for 8-9 days.”
Several franchises have expressed interest in participating in the inaugural Women’s Bangladesh Premier League (WBPL), confirmed BCB director. He believes the tournament will significantly contribute to the growth of women’s cricket in the country.
Nick Pothas resigns as Bangladesh assistant coach before Champions Trophy
17 hrs ago“We’ve already had discussions with some franchises, and they’ve shown interest. We want to start with this and see the impact of introducing a T20 competition for women. We are hopeful that it will take women’s cricket to the next level.” said Nazmul Abedin.
Unlike India’s Women’s Premier League (WPL), or similar tournaments like the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) in Australia, The Hundred in England, and the Women’s Caribbean Premier League (CPL), the Women’s BPL will not feature four overseas players per team.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) made this decision to ease the financial burden on franchises.
“Financially, it’s challenging to include four overseas players. At the moment, the franchises are not ready to bear that pressure. Additionally, we want to provide more opportunities for our local players. That’s why we’ve limited the number of teams to three, ensuring better competition and allowing our players to improve.”
