Avishek Mitra exclusive: ‘Work hard and stay hungry’

He might not have hit the international stage yet, but he does have the talent to do so in the near future. Avishek Mitra, who is also fondly called ‘Avi’, is a household name in Rajshahi, the place he hails from.

He, however, has made Dhaka his home and he currently plays for Legends of Rupganj in the Dhaka Premier League. While the first match might have been disappointing on both personal and team’s front, where they lost against Sheikh Jamal, Rupganj won their second game against Mohammedan Sporting Club, with Avishek Mitra hitting a priceless 45 from 45 balls.

His knock in the crunch-end of the inning helped Rupganj post a tricky total of 231, something that Mohammedan failed to chase.

After his great performance, Cricfrenzy caught up with the man of the moment and asked him some questions.

Cricfrenzy (Cf): What is your view of today’s performance in the Dhaka Premier League against Mohammedan?

Avishek Mitra (AM): We couldn’t start well in the first match [against Sheikh Jamal], so the second match was very important. Everyone performed at their best. The main thing is that everyone’s commitment today was great.

Cf: What about your individual performance of 45 runs in 45 balls?

AM: I didn’t do anything big, I made a small contribution for my team in the little time that I got.

Cf: Bowling or batting, which do you prefer more?

AM: I prefer batting, but I also enjoy bowling.

Cf: But you bowl well too, do you put in extra effort?

AM: Yes. After finishing my batting [practice], I start bowling. It is going good.

Cf: Views on Bangladesh’s loss against Sri Lanka?

AM: In cricket, sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. But I think our planning should have been a little better.

Cf: Speaking of planning, what are your future plans?

AM: The plan is to play for the national team.

Cf: The Dhaka Premier League is a good platform as lots of people follow it…

AM: Yes. I think that the DPL is important for players like us who don’t play in the Bangladesh Premier League, so we have to perform here.

Cf: You batted alongside first-class cricket legend Tushar Imran. How does it feel batting with him?

AM: It is great. He guides us a lot.

Cf: You faced Bangladesh U19 sensation Qazi Onik today… what do you think of him?

AM: His change of pace is excellent and he bowls very intelligently.

Cf: Last question—anything to say for aspiring cricketers?

AM: Work hard and stay hungry
