India have always faced the problem regarding their no.4 spot for the past few years. They have tried several players in that particular place including Ambati Rayudu but no one could seal that place for a long time.
In 2019, during the World Cup, India faced the same issue with the no.4 spot. Before going to that, Ambati Rayudu was likely to be fit in the place as he did quite well at that position. However, he was dropped from the squad and all-rounder Vijay Shankar was named. And, India failed to reach the final of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 after losing to New Zealand in the semi-final.

However, Suresh Raina, who has recently announced his retirement from international cricket has said that had Rayudu been a part of the team, India would have won the trophy as well.
“I wanted Rayudu to be India’s number four because he was working very hard, playing [for] almost one and a half years. He performed really well and he wasn’t there. I didn’t enjoy the tour in 2018 because of the circumstances where Rayudu failed his fitness test. It didn’t feel good that I was picked as he failed,” Suresh Raina was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.
“He was good at number four. If he was part of the squad for the World Cup, we would have won the tournament. Rayudu was the best choice and as it’s the way he plays the game in the CSK. And he was batting really well in the camp in Chennai,” he added.
In the World Cup, Vijay Shankar and Rishabh Pant were tried at the no.4 place but they failed to do well. And now after the World Cup, Shreyas Iyer was given the chance and since then he has been doing well and trying to seal the place.
