Legendary West Indies fast bowler Courtney Walsh has been appointed an assistant coach to the West Indies senior women’s team for the ongoing series against India Women.

Walsh, who previously held the role of bowling coach with the Bangladesh senior men’s team, will assist interim head coach Gus Logie as the Windies Women play India Women in three ODI’s and five T20s.

In August, Walsh had indicated to The Gleaner that he would relish a role in the West Indies setup, and the history-making fast bowler was happy when he was approached to work with his close friend Logie and impart his knowledge with the regional women.

“My function is to focus a lot more on the bowlers and the cricket, in general, to get the ladies together. I’m just happy to be able to work with Gus – we haven’t had a chance to be on the same team since we were players and we just want the women to play the type of cricket we know they can play, said Walsh.

KEEN TO REMAIN
Walsh, who also made it clear that he was keen to remain in the Caribbean to work following his Bangladesh stint, added that the transition to working with the women will be a smooth one.

“The ladies have been very warm and receptive and listened to what I’ve got to say. They are not afraid of trying and implementing what I’ve been telling them. I think one of the advantages I have is that I was involved in women’s cricket before as a selector, and I was part of a couple of their training camps, so they know me and they’ve seen me around. They know I want the best for them and they appreciate that, so for me, it’s a plus coming back into the fold of the women’s team now,” Walsh added.

Meanwhile, Jamaican physiotherapist Matthew Parchment will work alongside Walsh and Logie during the series. Parchment had recently worked with the Jamaica Scorpions and the Jamaica Tallawahs.
