Bangladesh suffered a daunting 280-run thrashing against India in the first Test at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chepauk, Chennai, trailing by 1-0 in the series.

Ravichandran Ashwin picked up his 37th five-wicket haul of his career to steer India to a commanding win over the Tigers. Ashwin delivered an outstanding performance, scored an incredible 113 in the first innings and returned an impressive figure of six wickets conceding 87 runs in 20 overs in the second innings.

Najmul Hossain Shanto scored the highest 82 runs in chase of a mammoth 515 runs, yet Bangladesh managed to muster 234 all out on Day 4.

Starting the day on 158-4, Bangladesh batters could survive only 16.4 overs facing the dual-spin attack from Ashwin and Jadeja who picked up three wickets.

Bangladesh's batting line-up folded like playing cards following the dismissal of Shakib al Hasan, who survived a stumping chance against Jadeja, but eventually was caught at short leg off Ashwin.

Shakib scored 25 and Shanto forged a 48-run partnership in the morning but batters failed miserably down the order as Litton Das (1) had a brief 10-ball stay.

Then Ashwin who took three wickets on day three, dismissed Mehidy Hasan Miraz (1) to bag his five-wicket haul and later got Taskin to complete his six-fer.

Ashwin was adjudged as the player of the match for his six wickets after a century in first innings.

Earlier, India declared their second innings at 287-4 on day three after centuries from Shubman Gill, who hit an unbeaten 119, and returning Rishabh Pant, who made 109, flattened the opposition.

The Indian bowlers, spearheaded by Jasprit Bumrah, gave India an early upper hand by dismissing Bangladesh for 149 in their first innings.

Bangladesh moved to sixth from fourth position in the World Test Championship (WTC) points table.
