Bangladesh star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan made a memorable Country Championship debut for the historic English club Surrey County Cricket Club on Monday as he took four wickets against Somerset in Taunton.
Somerset were bowled out for 317 in their first innings on the opening day, with Shakib leading the bowling attack for Surrey, taking 4 wickets for 97 runs in 33.5 overs, which made him the best bowler for Surrey on debut.
Surrey captain Rory Burns introduced Shakib into the attack in the 11th over of the match. In his first spell, Shakib bowled 10 consecutive overs, finishing with figures of 10-3-29-0. The left-arm spinner maintained tight control, keeping the Somerset batsmen under pressure.
Shakib's first spell ended after 10 overs, but he was reintroduced into the attack shortly after, and he bowled 18 consecutive overs leading up to the tea break. During this time, Surrey found success through Shakib's efforts.
Shakib broke a 62-run partnership between Tom Abell and Tom Banton with an arm delivery that bowled Abell for 49. Returning for a third spell late in the day, Shakib quickly claimed three more wickets.
In his second over of the spell, he bowled Kasey Aldridge and had Craig Overton stumped. In the final over of the day, Shakib trapped Brett Randell LBW to claim his fourth wicket.
