England coach Trevor Bayliss has revealed that he is worried about the future of Alex Hales after his decision to retire from red-ball cricket. There have been repercussions for the Englishman after he took the decision as he failed to secure deals in the Caribbean Premier League and the Indian Premier League.

And England coach Trevor Bayliss is hoping that his decision doesn’t cost him in the long run as playing the longer format of the game helps a batsman improve his game.

“I said to him that hopefully it doesn’t affect him [badly],” Bayliss said.

“If he plays red-ball cricket, he gets a quantity of balls,” Bayliss said. “That helps with any form of the game. He had to weigh that up with going away and having the extra time to work on his white-ball skills. Only time will tell. If it doesn’t work, hopefully he is able to make a decision to come back into red-ball cricket.”

He then compared the current situation of England with that of West Indies as the latter’s players’ also prefer playing the short formats over the longer ones.

“In a way, we are catching up with the rest of the world with these decisions. Somewhere like the West Indies a lot of their players have made that decision. It’s becoming a way of the world. Some will get it right, some wrong.”
