Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) is set to introduce a revised incentive structure that will reward players for beating top-ranked teams while penalizing defeats against lower-ranked sides such as Bangladesh and Afghanistan.

According to local media reports, Sri Lankan players will now receive bonuses only for winning series against the top four teams in ICC rankings across all formats, Tests, ODIs, and T20Is.

Victories against similarly ranked or lower-ranked teams will not earn any bonus, while losses against such sides will result in a 10 percent deduction from match fees.

Currently, Sri Lanka sit sixth in both Test and ODI rankings, with Bangladesh placed ninth in both formats. Afghanistan and Zimbabwe are positioned further below in the rankings.

In T20Is, Sri Lanka are ranked eighth, followed by Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Zimbabwe.

The new bonus structure offers significant rewards for overseas Test series wins against top-ranked teams. A victory against the No.1 ranked Test side would earn players $150,000 (approximately BDT 1.84 crore), with decreasing bonuses for beating teams ranked second, third, and fourth. Home series wins will carry lower bonuses.

In ODIs, away series wins against the top four teams will also bring substantial financial rewards, while home series bonuses will be half of those amounts.

For T20Is, bonus payouts will remain equal for both home and away series wins, matching ODI away-series rewards.

At present, India top both ODI and T20I rankings, while Australia lead the Test rankings, followed by South Africa, England and India.

The move is aimed at boosting competitiveness and motivating Sri Lankan players to perform consistently against stronger opposition while maintaining standards against lower-ranked teams.
