Dhaka Leopards pulled off a major upset on the opening day of the Dhaka Premier League (DPL), defeating defending champions Abahani Limited by five wickets.

The match, reduced to 30 overs due to rain at the Bashundhara Sports Complex, saw Leopards chase down a target of 182 with five balls to spare, marking a strong start to their campaign under captain Mohammad Mithun.

After being put in to bat, Abahani suffered an early collapse, losing two wickets for just 12 runs, including Soumya Sarkar for a duck.

Mahidul Islam Ankon (38) and Mehrab Hossain (38) steadied the innings before Sabbir Rahman produced a late blitz.

The experienced batter smashed an unbeaten 55 off 29 balls, including two fours and five sixes, powering his side to 181 for 8. Moin Khan was the pick of the bowlers for Leopards, claiming three wickets for 21 runs.

In reply, opener Zakir Hasan set the tone with an aggressive knock, scoring a match-winning 74 off 66 deliveries, featuring six fours and three sixes. Contributions from Jawad Abrar (23) and Saikat Ali (28) kept the chase on track, while skipper Mithun added a composed 37 to guide the team home.

Although Jishan Alam struck twice late in the innings to create a brief moment of tension, Dhaka Leopards held their nerve to secure a memorable victory.
