Bangladesh star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has expressed strong support for Tamim Iqbal, stating that the country’s cricket will benefit if the former captain is elected president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board.

Tamim, who is currently heading the BCB’s ad-hoc committee, has been tasked with overseeing cricket operations as well as organizing the upcoming board elections, scheduled for June.

He has already confirmed his intention to contest in the election and could take on the presidency for a longer term if elected.

Shakib noted that although Tamim has not yet been elected, his leadership so far has been encouraging.

“He hasn’t been elected yet; he has been given the responsibility to conduct the election. But if he becomes president, I believe he will have a long-term plan, and Bangladesh cricket will definitely benefit from that,” Shakib said at the EU T20 Belgium 2026 jersey launch event in Mumbai.

Tamim had previously attempted to take part in the last BCB election but withdrew, alleging government interference.

Following a change in government, complaints regarding irregularities in that election were investigated by the National Sports Council, which eventually dissolved the previous board and formed the current ad-hoc committee under Tamim’s leadership.

Since taking charge, Tamim has introduced several positive initiatives, including improving spectator experience in stadiums, increasing match fees and salaries for domestic cricketers, and reviving the traditional use of ball boys in T20 matches.

Alongside administrative developments, Bangladesh have also shown strong performances on the field. After losing the first ODI against New Zealand, the team bounced back to win the series 2-1 and also secured victory in the opening T20I.

Shakib praised the team’s current form, emphasizing a shift from individual brilliance to collective performance.

“Bangladesh are playing really well right now. They’ve just beaten New Zealand and won the first T20I as well. Earlier, the team depended a lot on individual performances, but now it’s more team-oriented. I think that’s the right way to move forward,” he added.
