A mobile court on Tuesday handed one month jail to an Indian citizen for illegal betting through his mobile phone during Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) matches at the Sylhet International Stadium, said a government official.
An inter-ministerial meeting in January last year empowered local administration in Dhaka, Chittagong and Sylhet to run mobile courts during cricket matches to tackle illegal betting during the last edition of BPL and organizers followed the same during the ongoing edition as well.
The mobile court of Executive Magistrate Mohammad Mainul Hossain Chowdhury told the reporters that they have handed over the punishment after he was found guilty of illegal betting.

‘’He was trying to contact in India for several times and after it was proved we handed him the punishment,’’ said Mainul.
‘’He was an Indian citizen and he was betting from here. We were not able to receive any kind of documents like passport or any other thing from him. He could not speak Bengali and he could only speak Hindi. He had admitted his offence and said that he won’t repeat this kind of mistake any further,’’ he added.
BCB security chief Hossain Imam said that the person was named Imran Pashar, hailing from Bihar.
‘’His name was Imran Pashar and he came from Bihar. He was handed jail for one month,’’ said Imam.
On January 8 at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium five Indians were fined for illegal betting in BPL.
